Representatives of Rosneft Oil Company have participated in 10th “Arctic: Today and the Future” International Forum held in St. Petersburg. There they presented a report on the Company’s long-term research programme that included geological, hydrometeorological, environmental and other studies. These efforts are being undertaken jointly with the nation’s leading research and development organisations.
Participants in the Forum’s working and panel sessions, conferences and roundtables discussed social and economic issues, research and technology, transport, industry, communications and digital technologies, the environment, and macro-regional security.
It is one of the Company’s key priorities and an integral part of its corporate culture to protect the environment while conducting its business activities. Rosneft makes a commitment and takes all the necessary steps to preserve and restore natural resources, to protect the biological diversity in the regions of the Company’s operation.
Rosneft has conducted 26 comprehensive research expeditions in the area from the Barents Sea to the Sea of Okhotsk since 2012. The total duration of the research teams’ stay at sea exceeded three years.
As a result, unique data on the ice, hydrometeorological, engineering and geological, and environmental conditions of Russia’s Arctic seas was obtained, and a set of studies of sea ice and ice formations across the entire Russian Arctic, from the Barents Sea to the Chukchi Sea, was conducted for the first time. The Kara Winter 2015 and Kara Summer 2016 expedition became the biggest Arctic studies in the newest history of Russia.
For the first time, the glaciers of the Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya archipelagos, which are major sources of icebergs in the Arctic seas, were fully surveyed. The data obtained will help ensure the safety of vessels and platforms operating at sea and predict the occurrence and trajectory of icebergs.
In Autumn 2020, Rosneft performed stratigraphic drilling in the North of the Kara Sea jointly with Innopraktika, the Moscow State University and Rosgeo, for the first time in the history of geological research on the Arctic shelf of the Russian Federation. The study of the rock samples obtained will substantially improve the efficiency of the exploration works.
Rosneft implements the corporate programme of research, conservation and monitoring of key species indicating the sustainability of the Arctic ecosystems, which are polar bear, Atlantic walrus, wild reindeer and ivory gull, the rare gull subspecies listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation.
Information on physical geography, oceanology, hydrometeorology, ecology, and the distribution of marine mammals, based on archive data and the results of scientific research in the Arctic, has been published in a series of environmental atlases of the Russian seas, which Rosneft and Innopraktika prepared and published together. These atlases are used by the scientific community and industry specialists to carry out research and production activities on the Arctic shelf.
