Rosneft Oil Company’s ecologists have released more than 2 million fry of red-listed sturgeon into the water bodies in the area of the Vostok Oil project. Since 2009, the Company has released more than 8 million fry of endangered fish species, such as sturgeon, whitefish, thymallus and peled, into the rivers of Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production and implements several comprehensive programmes for the preservation and restoration of natural resources. In 2020, Rosneft developed and approved its Environmental Vision 2035, which defines the basic principles of the Company’s environmental protection activities.
The fry were raised at the request of Rosneft at local fish hatcheries and were released into the water in the presence of representatives of supervisory and environmental agencies near Yeniseisk and Dudinka in the Taimyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District. These areas have the best conditions for the fry, among which the water’s temperature, its chemical composition, the availability of food and the number of species of predatory fish. The oil workers are working together with the Yenisei branch of Glavrybvod to replenish fish stock.
The Siberian sturgeon was chosen for the aquatic biodiversity of the Yenisei for a reason: this commercially important fish is red-listed and endangered. That is why an artificial replenishment of the Yenisei River with the fry contributes to the preservation of the population.
