RN-Uvatneftegaz Completes Red-listed Bird Survey in Uvat District

20 December 2022

RN-Uvatneftegaz, part of Rosneft’s oil production complex, has summarised the results of a grant project to preserve the biodiversity of the Tyumen region. Within the scope of the project, scientists researched the ornithofauna and the condition of populations of rare and protected bird species, included in the Red Books of the Tyumen region and Russia.

Environment protection is an integral part of Rosneft Oil Company’s corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business. The Company has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years, reaffirming its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Tyumen State University scientists conducted research and fieldwork in the riverside valley of the Irtysh River over an area of about 9,000 square kilometres. During Stage One of the research, ornithologists collected and analysed data on rare and protected bird species, and during Stages Two and Three they conducted field research to estimate the quantitative condition of the populations.

Primary field data was collected by route survey, long-focus optics photographing birds, digital recording of voices to determine species affiliation, and sound stimulation were performed. Such studies have not been carried out in the district since the end of the last century.

During the expedition, scientists found representatives of 70 bird species belonging to 10 groups, including 11 rare and protected species. These include white-tailed sea eagle, Eurasian curlew, mute swan, osprey and others.

Ornithologists analysed the main limiting factors for rare and endangered species, and gave recommendations for optimising nature use, habitats and nesting sites in the study area.

Scientists have also developed a list of measures to reduce the negative impact on rare bird populations, including limiting industrial activities during the nesting period (May-June), implementing biotechnical measures to build artificial nesting sites, flutter grounds and gravel pits, protecting forests from natural fires, regulating predatory bird populations, and educating the public about the environment.

Rosneft implements a number of programmes to study and conserve flora and fauna in the regions of its operations. More than 20 research projects on rare animals, birds and fish, as well as the preservation of the national culture of small indigenous peoples, have been developed since 2014.
