Rosneft awards grants for scientific research in Taimyr

21 April 2023

RN-Vankor summarised the results of the first grant competition to support scientific research of applied importance to the Taimyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District of Krasnoyarsk Territory and its indigenous population in the region where the largest oil production project, Vostok Oil, is being implemented.

The purpose of the grant is to contribute to solving social problems of importance to the territory of the indigenous minorities of the North, to develop scientific knowledge of the territory and to preserve the biodiversity and traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples.

This year, RN-Vankor supported a project to assess the status of aquatic biological resources in the Yenisei Gulf of the Kara Sea. Scientists from the Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University will conduct a study on the composition of ichthyofauna in the Arctic zone of the Taimyr, which will be carried out for the first time.

The Taymir is home to some of the world’s largest breeding grounds for anseriformes. Anseriformes specialists from the Association for the Study and Conservation of Birds of Northern Eurasia will analyse the number and distribution of birds in the Western Taimyr and identify key habitats of rare species listed in the Red Book of Russia and the Red Book of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The result will be recommendations for the conservation of anseriformes and the creation of resting areas at key stages of their life cycle.

The Taimyr Peninsula is a summer migration area for most of the reindeer population. According to scientists from the V. N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, vegetation productivity in the Taimyr is increasing, which is likely to lead to changes in the direction and timing of reindeer and other Arctic animal migrations. Information on the status and dynamics of the vegetation cover of the western part of the Taimyr will be compiled in the form of electronic atlases.

The RN-Vankor grant programme involved research teams from leading Siberian universities, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and state nature reserves. In total, more than 20 projects were submitted for the grant competition.
