Rosneft supports the Festival of Indigenous Peoples' Culture of the North of the Tyumen Region

19 February 2024

The Festival of Indigenous Culture was held in the Tyumen Region with the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz (part of Rosneft's oil and gas production complex). The thematic event contributes to the preservation and popularization of the national culture and traditions of the Khanty people.

Representatives of indigenous peoples from all settlements of the Uvat District came to participate in the sports and cultural program of the Festival. The participants competed in national sports - throwing a tynzyan on a chorei (a harness is to be thrown on a pole used to drive reindeer), throwing rings on reindeer antlers, tug-of-war, archery and jumping over sleds. The young guests enjoyed a separate entertainment and development program.

The guests of the Festival were also attracted by master classes on beadwork, amulets, birch bark spoons, national dolls and their painting with traditional ornaments of the North. Moreover, the visitors savored dishes of national cuisine - northern fish soup and tea with taiga herbs and berries, and rode on a reindeer sled. The event included the Northern Patterns Arts and Crafts Exhibition, the National Costume Exhibition and the Demyan Khanty Photo Exhibition.

At the opening of the festival, representatives of RN-Uvatneftegaz presented indigenous people with equipment for traditional hunting, fishing and harvesting activities - snowmobiles, boat motors, gasoline generators, as well as Rosneft motor oil for engines. In recent years, the company has supplied over 140 units of equipment to Khanty families.

The event, which originated with the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz as a folk crafts fair, is being held in an expanded festival format for the second year in a row. At the fair, the Khanty community presented fresh-frozen and smoked fish, meat, berries, pine nuts, fur items and beadwork.

One of the key areas of Rosneft's social policy is the preservation of the national culture of the indigenous peoples of the North and their traditional way of life. The Company's enterprises implement numerous social projects in their regions of operation, developing infrastructure in northern villages, supporting reindeer herding families, and improving the material and technical base of educational institutions and social and medical facilities in the ancestral homelands of indigenous minorities.

RN-Uvatneftegaz, together with the Uvat district administration, supports representatives of the Khanty, Mansi and Evenk peoples of the Tyumen region, providing comprehensive assistance in preserving their distinctive culture and way of life. The enterprise pays annual tuition fees for young people at specialised secondary and higher education institutions and finances participation in competitions in the national sport of oblas (boat racing). The enterprise also provides access to winter roads and ice crossings built for production purposes, and organises fuel distribution in the fields closest to the camps.

Note for Editors:

RN-Uvatneftegaz, a Rosneft subsidiary, is engaged in the exploration and development of the Uvat group of fields located in Tyumen Region. The Uvat project includes 19 license blocks with a total area of more than 25,000 square kilometres.
