Rosneft Completes Taimyr Bird Research Expedition

02 October 2024

Rosneft supported a scientific expedition to study birds in Taimyr, which included comprehensive aerial surveys of the inner delta of the Yenisei River (Brekhovsky Islands), as well as large islands of the Yenisei Bay.

The total length of bird research expedition air routes in the Krasnoyarsk region exceeded 4,000 kilometres. The main objective of the research was to assess the importance of the Yenisei River delta for waterfowl and waterbirds during their autumn migration. Scientists have noted movements of tundra swans, geese, ducks and gulls in these areas. In addition, specialists took photos of all birds spotted along the route - more than 67,000 photos were taken. Based on the obtained data, the number and species composition of flocks and individuals and their nesting coordinates will be clarified. This will provide a comprehensive view of the fauna and distribution of birds in the area, including rare and endangered species.

The scientists also surveyed the shores of the Yenisei Gulf and adjacent parts of the Kara Sea coastline during the expedition. Here, experts observed aggregations of gulls and registered active migration of geese.

The research is being carried out as part of Rosneft's biodiversity conservation programme called Tamura. The Arctic Research Centre of the Company implements the programme. Studies of reindeer and polar bear on the Taimyr Peninsula and fish in the Yenisei River estuary are planned between 2024 and 2027. There will be ten expeditions in total over four years.

This season, scientists have already conducted field work to study birds on the Brekhovsky Islands. Specialists have crossed more than 400 kilometres in search of rare bird species listed in the Red Book. In addition, Rosneft supported research expeditions to study wild reindeer and polar bears as part of the Tamura programme.Rosneft is committed to environment-oriented campaigns and biodiversity preservation activities. Arctic Research Centre implements the most ambitious program for studying the Arctic region since Soviet times. More than 50 expeditions have already been carried out over 12 years, during which scientists have studied hydrometeorological, geological and biological peculiarities of the region. It has been the source of a unique body of information on Arctic climate, nature and wildlife.
